Important to note that they are using Woolongs as currency. Same as Bebop.
[–]cptn_garlockhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/cptngarlock 25 points ago
₩1000 says we see Faye working in the background at a breastaurant.
[–]DarkToad97 7 points ago
This guy! This guy has a perfect vision in mind.
[–]dcrazy17 8 points ago
Do you think that its just a throwback or that there doing some connected universe stuff.
[–]roxastheman 11 points ago
It is probably what /u/retrobrigade said. Just a subtle nod to Bebop. Even though Dandy may be in the same universe as Bebop, Dandy is thousands of years beyond Bebop's time. We can assume this based on what the old ramen shop guy said.
[–]ClintonD85 8 points ago
Somebody also made a chart connecting it to the Gundam universe(s). and there was a Gundam-esque mecha in the Japanese opening.
Maybe Space Dandy takes place in the nexus point of all anime universes. Wouldn't surprise me.
[–]retrobrigade 4 points ago
I think that'll just be a subtle reference for the fans more so than a plot point or something.

Next episode: the fanservice episode!
[–]roxastheman 16 points ago
He said it like there hadn't already been fanservice.
[–]ifonefoxifonefox 7 points ago
Well, it couldn't hurt to have more.
[–]retrobrigade 7 points ago
And the episode after that: the fanservice episode!
And the one after that: the fanservice episode!
And the one after that...
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 20 points ago
Galaxy Street View. LOL! Gogol Empire got proprietary products
[–]ifonefoxifonefox 9 points ago
No wonder they're able to monitor Dandy's location! Gogol has no respect for privacy.
[–]Aiox 15 points ago
1) I wish there was an explanation of how they survived the incident last episode
2) Goddamn this series' music is great
[–]retrobrigade 11 points ago
Shinchiro Watanabe loves his episodic adventures. Samurai Champloo also had its own fair share of random, unexplained goofy nonsense.
[–]ClintonD85 5 points ago
Yup, same with Bebop as well.
[–]Tendoi 3 points ago
That meteor episode...
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 7 points ago
I'm not sure we'll ever get an explanation.
[–]ifonefoxifonefox 23 points ago
Dandy dandied his way out of it.
That's the Space Dandy way.
[–]dcrazy17 1 point ago
Yeah the lack of explanation kind of disappointed me as well. Maybe we can a hint as to how in a future episode.
[–]Link3693 4 points ago
We did get a hint in the first episode: The whole cosmic string stuff could've made alternate Space Dandys or something. While it's just speculation at this point, it may not have been there for nothing.
[–]Commander034 1 point ago
I don't want an explanation. I want everyone dieing in episode 1 and then not being dead to just be canon. Just live with the flow, baby.
[–]DerpyDoodleDoo 1 point ago
At the end of the first episode during the credits it showed them in a similar situation as the second episode. It looked like they survived by going through a wormhole. Just pure luck.
[–]Link3693 14 points ago
Scarlet is best girl.
Ramen feels.
NOT DEAD!
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 7 points ago
I concur, Scarlet is best girl.
[–]OffInABlueBox 12 points ago
No, Meow's pillow is best girl.
[–]ClintonD85 5 points ago
Its refreshing to see a best girl who's a real Faye Valentine-type woman. You just don't see character designs like that much anymore.
[–]OpiumTraitor 6 points ago
It's that Grade-A butt, isn't it?
[–]SonicFrost 2 points ago
Erza?
Seriously, it's the same voice actress, Colleen Clinkenbeerd!
[–]Korra7794 2 points ago
Not to mention her name is Scarlet.
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 13 points ago
Wait, was that Haruhi Suzumiya on that pillow?
[–]Zimfanhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/DatAsuna 7 points ago
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 1 point ago
Yeah I just looked back and checked. It was going so fast I was seeing things.
[–]Zimfanhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/DatAsuna 3 points ago
as a huge Haruhi fan, I was hoping it was
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 1 point ago
Yeah, I was kinda hoping I was right too.
[–]Jiffytree 1 point ago
Screenshot?
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 2 points ago
Apparently it's just some random catgirl.
It went by so fast it looked like Haruhi to me.
[–]VehicularVikings 13 points ago
Woolongs are the currency? Same universe theory confirmed.
[–]Treflexhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Treflex 9 points ago
The universe just got a lot sillier and more colorful over the past few years
[–]ClintonD85 11 points ago
Apparently Domino Walker's mushroom business really hit big.
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 25 points ago
"Checking in at Fullmetal Noodlist and Men in Black" THESE REFERENCES!
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 12 points ago
Welp, guess they're keeping the opening the studio gave them.
[–]TheBeckwithSays 4 points ago
I know. I'm really disappointed with that.
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 6 points ago
Eh, I like the ED we got. But I would like Viva Namida instead of an opening narration.
[–]bloodfyr 4 points ago
I bet it's a licensing thing, like they couldn't or wouldn't pay for the rights to air the songs in the US.
[–]OperativePenguin 10 points ago
It is confirmed! There will be fan service next episode!
[–]SavageDisaster 9 points ago
Finally! I was wondering when we'd finally get some fan service
[–]ClintonD85 4 points ago
I'll laugh if what they showed is the only fanservice in the episode.
[–]OpiumTraitor 8 points ago
Scarlett's fight scene reminded me a bit of Cowboy Bebop's choreography. Also, Space Cat is best cat.
[–]SavageDisaster 6 points ago
Her motions were a lot like Spike's
[–]OpiumTraitor 1 point ago
Yep. I hope we see some more action, it looked great.
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 13 points ago
Did Dandy just Michael Jackson her?
[–]SavageDisaster 1 point ago
That he did
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 6 points ago
RIP in peace Ramen
[–]theclumsyninja 6 points ago
Do not watch on an empty stomach.
[–]ClintonD85 1 point ago
Food seems to be an important element in Watanabe works.
[–]not-a-penguin 5 points ago
Betting that Dandy's backstory is similar to that of Vash the Stampede's.
[–]Treflexhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Treflex 7 points ago
Feels like a reverse of Vash to me. Instead of looking like an idiot and is really a badass, everyone thinks Dandy is way more badass than he actually is.
[–]ClintonD85 6 points ago
That seems to be what Dr. Gel thinks.
[–]SBTWAnimeReviews 5 points ago
My favorite line of the night was "Fullmetal Noodlist." Caught me off gaurd and almost made me spill my beer.
[–]fauxromanou 3 points ago
Space alien bike hooligan ramen maestro.
[–]John_7_2 5 points ago
The most surprising thing for me is just how much I enjoyed the fight scenes. They were animated really well in my opinion, and that's something that seems like it'd be skipped over in a comedy like Space Dandy. 10/10 this anime's one of my favorites this season.
[–]MadxHatter0 2 points ago
I seriously enjoyed this episode. Scarlet and the Phantom alien were both extremely awesome, and enjoyable. The comedy was pretty good, but in terms of over the topness it was definitely below Episode 1.
[–]ClintonD85 1 point ago
Yeah, I kinda expected that the amount of over-the-topness would vary from episode-to-episode. Glad we got some good quality Shinichiro Watanabe Feels™.
[–]itsnotadamgerety 2 points ago
I constantly get a Cowboy Bebop feeling from this, just slightly more comedic.
[–]viral_frost13 2 points ago
It would not be a true anime if there wasn't some sort of ramen reference.
[–]ATonOfBacon 2 points ago
If you look closely, when Dandy was approaching that Scarlet chick at the ramen shop, he threw in a Michael Jackson type move in between. Badass!
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 4 points ago
Meow's Pillow..
[–]ThadChathttp://hummingbird.me/users/4913-tails/ 6 points ago
I'm liking Meow more and more! He's so cute! He really is a (space) cat!
[–]XxJCAlloran218xX 4 points ago
The preview for the next episode just made me laugh too much. Somebody get me a towel!
[–]ClintonD85 2 points ago
Love how self-deprecating and self-referential it was. "Yup, this is an anime, gotta have fanservice. Here's some fanservice. And here's some more fanservice."
[–]BadLuckBen 2 points ago
They also acted like there hasn't been any up until now.
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 3 points ago
I'm just gonna take a guess and say Episode 1 is just non-canon and that this is the REAL episode 1.
[–]xarlev 9 points ago
Then how did meow get there?
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 1 point ago
Dandy said they picked him up because they thought Meow would be useful. So I'm assuming they just met him again off screen.
[–]cuhcuh 5 points ago
the purpose of this show, or anything this director works on, isn't exactly to be coherent. samurai champloo was like this too.
[–]ClintonD85 6 points ago
Yup, the entire cast of Samurai Champloo "died" at the end of an episode as well. They came back in the next episode with no mention of it.
[–]Treflexhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Treflex 1 point ago
Well it's not like they couldn't have found a way off, but wasn't super necessary to the main plot to show or was just funnier to leave it without explanation.
[–]YonkouProductions[S] 3 points ago
Scarlett's got Grade A butt. Why so contradictory Dandy?
[–]AdAgito 1 point ago
So is the ending of episode one part of a bigger plot that will explain why they're alive?

[–]YonkouProductions[S] 3 points ago
Only the Toonami premier
[–]ClintonD85 1 point ago
Hey, did anyone else catch the Bones logo in the background of the alternate universe? It's on the left side of the screen when the camera pulls out to show the "island".
[–]dermert 0 points ago
Honestly I didn't like this episode as much as last weeks. I'll watch the next episode though to see if it goes anywhere. The series might bounce around with tones where one episode is super ridiculous, the next one a little more serious, than the next one super ridiculous, and so on and so forth.
[–]OavatosDKhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/Oavatos 0 points ago
That was amusing enough. It was sort of in-between the first half of episode one and the second half of episode one in terms of quality. In other words, fairly average in terms of comedy while still having stunning style.
Oh well, Space Dandy has disappointed the hype train so far but at least I have Sekai Seifuku to carry Winter season.
[–]Bobduhhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Bobduh 3 points ago
Sekai Seifuku will save us all.
[–]OffInABlueBox 4 points ago
It's been two episodes give it two more before you completely tune it out.
[–]OavatosDKhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/Oavatos 1 point ago
I never said I was gonna drop the show, so calm down.
[–]OffInABlueBox 3 points ago
I wasn't trying to attack you, sorry if I came off like that. I just think it's literally brand new and more then two episodes need to come out before it can be called disapointing when it hasn't developed into anything so far.
[–]Treflexhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Treflex 1 point ago
Don't give up yet! Most people don't find Cowboy Bebop amazing until episode 5.
[–]OavatosDKhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/Oavatos 1 point ago
disappointed the hype train so far
[–]OkabeKurisu -3 points ago
Upvoted you.
You really cant say anything against space dandy on reddit unless you want to get downvoted. Its the same with anything against a dub no matter how good your explanation is.
Edit: i know i was going to get downvoted for saying the truth.
[–]SmokedHunter -4 points ago
Still not using the proper OP/ED on Toonami. Because a montage of clips from the first episode set to a generic tune is totally better than the actual Yoko Kanno ending theme, right? Time constraints my ass.
Will not be watching it via toonami any more.
[–]GreyouTThttp://hummingbird.me/users/1041-greyoutt/feed 3 points ago
It's what got sent to them. Not their fault it's a different opening/ending.
[–]ClintonD85 3 points ago
Yeah, I'm guessing they didn't have the OP and ED finished when they sent Funi the footage for dubbing. So they had to make do with what they had.
I'm fine with it. We still get the meat of the show, and that's the important part, in fact, I'd argue that overlong OPs and EDs actually detract from shows by leaving less time for the show proper. Outside of some certain shows, I usually skip over OPs anyways.
[–]BadLuckBen 2 points ago
It also avoids the issue of spoiler OP/EDs.
[–]eldigg 2 points ago
Funi doesn't want to license the songs. The head toonami guy (Jason Demarco) said he spent last week trying to get the original OP/ED for the toonami airing, but no luck.
I've also read it might have to do with shortening the show so more advertisements can be run, but I'm not sure that's the case since I haven't timed them.
